Push Back Rack is another way warehouses are reducing the need for aisles, obviously saving a lot of empty space. Push Back Rack is an ideal style of pallet rack for the warehouse following a last-in, first-out inventory system.
In a Push Back Rack system, there are carts rolling on inclined rails. Each cart holds a pallet. Pallets are placed on carts by a forklift. When a pallet is placed on a cart, the cart rolls back, “pushing back” the pallets behind it. When a pallet is removed from a cart, the pallets behind it slowly roll forward to fill in the empty space, exposing the next pallet in line.
The advantages of push back rack include:
- Much more selectivity than drive-in racks
- The carts are color-coded so they can be used to visually organize inventory
- High storage density and maximum space utilization
- You can store pallets several deep yet still have easy access to them
- The carts protect the pallets, preventing product damage
