Inventory Tracking: Bar Codes, RFID, and More

You have millions of dollars worth of merchandise on your pallet rack. Counting and controlling the inventory on your pallet rack is essential to avoiding costly errors, improving customer service, and boosting the profitability of your company. These days, there are many inventory devices and systems you can choose from, and selecting the perfect inventory tracking setup is a big step toward making your warehouse the best it can be.

Inventory tracking solutions should be easy to install, easy to learn, and easy to use. By keeping your inventory tracking as simple as possible, your employees will feel happier and more confident in helping you to achieve accurate inventory management. Here are a few inventory tracking terms you will come across:

Bar codes—A barcode (or bar code) displays information in a way that a computer can read and process it quickly. Barcodes are often a group of parallel lines but more recent bar codes are also seen as a series of dots, circles, or other characters. OCR inventory software is an alternative to barcodes but many feel OCR technology has not been perfected yet.

Bar code scanners—Barcode scanners improve data entry by reading barcodes and storing the information into a device such as a handheld computer or a PC. Bar code scanners are typically use laser technology for warehouse applications.

Voice technology—Voice technology allows the user, such as a picker, to input inventory information by speaking into a microphone, which the computer understands. A hands-free headset with a microphone is a common input device for voice technology.

RFID—Radio frequency identification is employed through devices which are attached to your inventory. These devices transmit inventory data (via radio frequency) to an RFID receiver.
