How to Choose the Right Casters for Your Work Environment
Weight guidelines for casters follow some basic assumptions about your caster usage. The weight guidelines assume the following:
- All casters are being operated on smooth surfaces. Rough surfaces, severe shocks, and obstructions require a higher capacity.
- All bearings must be properly lubricated and away from excessive temperatures, dirt, and other hindrances.
- Capacities generally refer to manually operated force. Power operations have different capacities.
- In order to avoid flat spots, storage load conditions require hard tread, steel, or polyurethane wheels.
If you are following the above guidelines for your casters, then you can safely use the general weight-bearing recommendations. However, if you are using casters in an environment with excessive temperatures, rough surfaces, corrosive materials, or heavy moisture, you will need casters with heavier weight-bearing capacities. Similarly, if you use power-operated machinery, your weight guidelines may be significantly different.
For the safest work environment, follow the weight guidelines for your casters. In addition to safety, casters that are used properly will provide durable performance, saving you the cost of replacing them.
